Costa Rica La Amistad comes from Finca La Amistad in the Coto Brus region of southern Costa Rica, where coffee farmer Roberto Montero has built an operation around the idea that producing excellent coffee and protecting the surrounding environment need not be competing goals.

The farm sits within a remarkable landscape of forest and coffee fields. Of the more than 6,000 hectares associated with La Amistad, only a small portion is devoted to coffee production, while the vast majority remains protected forest. Coffee is grown organically beneath a diverse canopy that provides habitat for wildlife and creates an ideal environment for shade-grown coffee.

That commitment to habitat has earned La Amistad the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Friendly certification, recognizing farms that preserve the tree canopy and ecological conditions needed by migratory birds traveling between North and South America. The shade trees also help protect the soil, conserve moisture and create a healthier growing environment for the coffee itself.

The farm's organic approach extends beyond the coffee plants. Roberto places an emphasis on responsible stewardship of the land while also supporting the seasonal workers and local community who make the harvest possible. The result is a coffee that represents something larger than what is in the cup: a model of coffee farming where quality, conservation and community can grow together.
