Bio

This organic Fair Trade coffee comes from the Amoju cooperative, a group of 535 small producers farming along the left bank of the Marañón River in northern Peru. The name Amoju comes from the Awajun language and means “fresh water,” an appropriate name for a cooperative whose farms lie around one of the Amazon River's important tributaries.

The cooperative was founded in 2016 with a focus on improving both the quality and sustainability of coffee production. Its members have adopted farming practices designed to help mitigate the effects of climate change, while working together to improve production, quality and access to better markets and prices.

Coffee production takes place entirely on the members' small 3- to 5-hectare farms, giving each producer close control over the cultivation and processing of their crop. Quality is also a priority within the cooperative itself. Jhon Kley Vasquez Diaz, whose family farms with the cooperative, serves as its quality assurance manager. An agro-industrial engineer by training, Jhon brings more than three years of coffee cupping experience to the job, helping the cooperative evaluate and improve the coffee it produces.

The result is a coffee that reflects the character of small family farms while benefiting from the collective knowledge and resources of the Amoju cooperative.
